Actually we didn't go to the cinema; we saw it in a neighbor's home where she has a nice big screen. <p></p><p>I'm glad that I hadn't paid to see it. It was rather torturous to be perfectly honest. One neighbor walked out in the middle saying that he know the plot/history. I stayed hoping it would get better, even though trying to run a marathon would probably have been more pleasant.</p><p>Just because it won lots of prizes doesn't mean it's good. I'm a cynic, realist, pragmatist, and I don't follow the crowds. Some movies which had won barely any awards have have held up and today over half a century later, like <a href="https://www.filmaffinity.com/en/movie-awards.php?movie-id=353180" target="_blank">Some Like It Hot</a>, and are now treasured, praised and viewed more than ever. Compare it to <a href="https://www.goldderby.com/article/2023/oscars-the-robe-roman-holiday/" target="_blank">Roman Holiday</a> and <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/the-sting-oscars-wins-1235784514/" target="_blank">The Sting</a>, also great award winners. They're favorites with many, though over a half a century old. If I'm even in enforced bedrest, please keep me cheerful and fascinated by watching movies like those. I doubt if people will will willing to watch the three hours of Oppenheimer in sixty 60 years, or even in ten, unless they're already unconscious.</p><p>Good cinema, like good literature must show character development, challenges and changes. Granted Oppenheimer did face challenges, but Cillian Murphey's expression, tone and expression never changed. Maybe it's because his facial skin had been stretched too tightly...</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCmUYIpl7UkedBU7dv7vjlAyAHRa7Yi4OxjqdkWT18M1UWguegLYPTqQDhJlVY5gl2lNRgqoSy90sos9yFRhO2zDXiUsTZjivW9TM0fNbb53CD0bbDBLswfoybQ7zEJIzpKWLVtxnfAO4I7B8cZd6by1v9r7HiZkQHmn3Q0vdVdkxQdJBXXWQ/s1506/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-13%20at%2007.45.14%20(2).jpeg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1369" data-original-width="1506" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnCmUYIpl7UkedBU7dv7vjlAyAHRa7Yi4OxjqdkWT18M1UWguegLYPTqQDhJlVY5gl2lNRgqoSy90sos9yFRhO2zDXiUsTZjivW9TM0fNbb53CD0bbDBLswfoybQ7zEJIzpKWLVtxnfAO4I7B8cZd6by1v9r7HiZkQHmn3Q0vdVdkxQdJBXXWQ/w200-h182/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-13%20at%2007.45.14%20(2).jpeg" width="200" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr></tbody></table>I was surprised to discover that Emily Blunt was the actress who played Kitty Oppenheimer, because, at least to me, she was unrecognizable and looked miserable. Kitty was a very poorly written character, which makes little sense. Do you consider that good acting for an attractive actress who did such a great job as in The Devil Wears Prada?<div><br /><div>The only aspect of the movie that impressed me was the visual at times, so I would have nominated them for the <a href="https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2024" target="_blank">Academy Award</a> for "Special Affects." Not only didn't they win it, but they weren't even nominated for that category.<p></p></div></div><div>If you're thinking of seeing Oppenheimer, think again. It's not worth three hours of your life. I couldn't find it. </p><p>My husband decided to be helpful and "dialed" me, but of course that didn't help, since the ring is via Bluetooth. I heard the ring through my hearing aids.</p><p>So I took out my hearing aids and opened the battery case to turn off the Bluetooth. </p><p>Suddenly sounds came out of a cabinet. Yes, I had placed my phone in a kitchen cabinet. I took it out, turned my hearing aids back on and returned them to my ears.😉</p><p>2-One morning my phone refused to make any sounds. I tried everything, turned it off. Restart didn't help. I psyched myself up to prepare for a trip to someone for repairs. </p><p>Before leaving, I took my hearing aids to insert in my ears and... discovered that I hadn't turned them off before going to sleep. There wasn't anything wrong with my telephone's sound. The sound had been going into the hearing aids which had been in their box. The only thing I hadn't tried was to turn off the Bluetooth. 😏</p><div class="blogger-post-footer">We can change the world!</div>Batyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09402874037427009327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8476955.post-52125772082349880202024-03-04T14:09:00.006+02:002024-03-04T14:09:57.330+02:00Women's Rosh Chodesh Adar 2 Prayers at Tel Shiloh<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Ladies, join us at Tel Shiloh, Shiloh Hakeduma on the 1st of Adar Bet, Monday March 11 at 8:30am.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ30wly9VcVDwT6fDDKLz0HWgivWXeONDjn4fZljs5z3uzuq_AapJAagKGrYXnnk__NZQr7f973kqbK4z-03pHmv58nuL8cRjI7dslxTXBJVb03vYrUj9i5NQm6rdh6GTBYlDV8ZGsPnYsTl4phMJ19RTXMANH16BpvIA5GqHPIHloOllq3nnG/s1600/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-04%20at%2013.48.25.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ30wly9VcVDwT6fDDKLz0HWgivWXeONDjn4fZljs5z3uzuq_AapJAagKGrYXnnk__NZQr7f973kqbK4z-03pHmv58nuL8cRjI7dslxTXBJVb03vYrUj9i5NQm6rdh6GTBYlDV8ZGsPnYsTl4phMJ19RTXMANH16BpvIA5GqHPIHloOllq3nnG/w400-h300/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-04%20at%2013.48.25.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8ubjjqsRqGYxWGI0_X_aV5MFd_-2XSENAGa36Xt7HRjBVDee_5-uArQz8-cRTSHSMQg5FTA0E49iyse0lDWKzWkOUmaKlq45yhxvuSjnNoikp0-gkfKm07mo6VtdXECpsn-03op4zNazCflsux-TxdpLPylrV5OctFil_EdfC2YylJYbvdA7d/s1600/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-03%20at%2021.27.54.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8ubjjqsRqGYxWGI0_X_aV5MFd_-2XSENAGa36Xt7HRjBVDee_5-uArQz8-cRTSHSMQg5FTA0E49iyse0lDWKzWkOUmaKlq45yhxvuSjnNoikp0-gkfKm07mo6VtdXECpsn-03op4zNazCflsux-TxdpLPylrV5OctFil_EdfC2YylJYbvdA7d/w400-h300/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-03-03%20at%2021.27.54.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br />Besides our Women's Prayers, there are many other things to do at the beautiful well developed archeological site at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AncientShilo" target="_blank">Tel Shiloh</a>. My favorite brewery is <a href="https://shop.shapirobeer.co.il/OurBeer" target="_blank">Shapiro</a>, but if I'm buying it has to be one of my favorites of theirs, their <a href="https://me-ander.blogspot.com/2019/04/beer-as-fruity-as-wine.html" target="_blank">IPA</a> or <a href="https://me-ander.blogspot.com/2019/03/best-beer-taste-test-1-success.html" target="_blank">Jack's Winter Ale</a>. I walked down Rechov Agrippas, Jerusalem, which has some liquor stores with beer. The first one had some Shapiro, but not those particular ones, and the same at the second shop. But in the second the salesman asked me what I was looking for, so I told him. <p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg73dfR79hLvrQux5AwYszK5PL3xGoAZs0dfMmHgaQl8en7tFhINTcIkFKgshXJC02DvZRsfO4hdwYtjNhLgmQPcRngsVaecPl-kzlzXa60kqhrpPcMv_IUBe5ZqgANWe1mE5FFF9NXmHKQ-h5327uUjqaCf6SozndxPzrhvlKjdJxnJsXSCBuP/s2048/1c9aa15a-d31c-4585-ae3e-adaaf997eaee.jpeg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg73dfR79hLvrQux5AwYszK5PL3xGoAZs0dfMmHgaQl8en7tFhINTcIkFKgshXJC02DvZRsfO4hdwYtjNhLgmQPcRngsVaecPl-kzlzXa60kqhrpPcMv_IUBe5ZqgANWe1mE5FFF9NXmHKQ-h5327uUjqaCf6SozndxPzrhvlKjdJxnJsXSCBuP/w200-h150/1c9aa15a-d31c-4585-ae3e-adaaf997eaee.jpeg" width="200" /></a></div>First he tried to interest me in Shapiro's newest beer, pineapple and mango flavored. Ever since I tasted the awful artificial fruit flavored beers at the <a href="https://me-ander.blogspot.com/2019/08/wheres-beer-jerusalem-beer-festival-2019.html" target="_blank">2019 Jerusalem Beer Festival</a>, I suffer a sort of PTS when people mention fruit flavored beer. As an amateur beer taster, I can't refuse when offered some, which I told the salesman, but there's no way I'd buy a bottle of an unknown beer.<p></p><p>One thing thing I didn't tell him was that I was scheduled to attend a beer tasting the following evening and suspected that this new Shapiro beer would be on the tasting menu. I had guessed correctly! And I must say that Shapiro has done a fantastic job with natural fruit flavored beer. </p><p>Farm to Bottle Pineapple Mango's a rich golden color with pleasant fruity aroma, hints of the mango and pineapple. Nothing artificial. We agreed that it's more a summer than a winter drink. I'd add it to the list of beers for those who don't like beer. Personally I'd prefer drinking it to white wines. So if you have a chance to buy some, go for it.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMF_UVJOiwieEEcZPb061i3TBpEToUFWY-CejjD5ozghuw-FWIKdsQLb9RvTNaLnKiehYMGTA5meUwstqzrYPhQFnJUv-YElJWfJJy8XGuHwHbIX4QXjPWc_NKKmmcnmlB7OXOivwrwwn1w-wuC-UkxfyUlssNqUDjG-xoYmX4btsP3CnLHUXQ/s2048/1730b4e0-a1b4-43ff-bdf4-0c7e133ef803.jpeg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMF_UVJOiwieEEcZPb061i3TBpEToUFWY-CejjD5ozghuw-FWIKdsQLb9RvTNaLnKiehYMGTA5meUwstqzrYPhQFnJUv-YElJWfJJy8XGuHwHbIX4QXjPWc_NKKmmcnmlB7OXOivwrwwn1w-wuC-UkxfyUlssNqUDjG-xoYmX4btsP3CnLHUXQ/w150-h200/1730b4e0-a1b4-43ff-bdf4-0c7e133ef803.jpeg" width="150" /></a></div>As you can see from the display of bottles behind us tasters, we sampled quite a few beers that evening. We ended with <a href="https://shevet-beer.co.il/product/barrel-aged-saison/" target="_blank">Barrel Aged Saison</a> from <a href="https://shevet-beer.co.il/beers/" target="_blank">Shevet</a>, another good Israeli craft brewery. <p></p><p>This aged saison beer was another hit. Lovely golden hue, rich aroma, fruity, honey, plus some spice. Due to the fact that it's bottled in a wine-sized bottle, it should be served socially, like wine. I'd also prefer this Shevet beer to white wine. </p><p>Israeli wines and even a local whiskey win international awards, and I'm pretty sure that our craft beers will be bringing home trophies, too.</p><p><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">We can change the world!</div>Batyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09402874037427009327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8476955.post-6811683078626667372024-02-19T14:23:00.001+02:002024-02-19T14:23:51.823+02:00Endives, Recipes Raw and Cooked<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO34iOUNkNHtqwsJ8ymyg_6oD3xgR0dKhWTAO0OtgNnfvx6G2ZYvsVQEkZCY6DHYfowg6CLIt2pzYr6SBVhEf2rLAhLbTPLzI7p9_OEIPDQIdpWh0CbF74iw33Wh3rvteiJdOVpQUPGkCvCl5OGlO9mMSWFN0S9s29J_SpKPjDZUAEEK1dSO3H/s1600/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-02-19%20at%2013.46.27.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO34iOUNkNHtqwsJ8ymyg_6oD3xgR0dKhWTAO0OtgNnfvx6G2ZYvsVQEkZCY6DHYfowg6CLIt2pzYr6SBVhEf2rLAhLbTPLzI7p9_OEIPDQIdpWh0CbF74iw33Wh3rvteiJdOVpQUPGkCvCl5OGlO9mMSWFN0S9s29J_SpKPjDZUAEEK1dSO3H/s320/WhatsApp%20Image%202024-02-19%20at%2013.46.27.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>I recently blogged that I had <a href=" https://me-ander.blogspot.com/2024/02/the-war-effort-volunteering-in.html" target="_blank">volunteered packing mushrooms and cauliflower</a> for sale at Chavat Tekoa, the Tekoa Farm. As a thank you gift, we had been given a bag of endives. Now, to be completely honest, I hadn't a clue as to what endives are or how to serve/prepare them.<div><br /></div><div>From the photo you can't see the size, so I must tell you they're relatively small, about the size of a skinny hand. While working with them, it occurred to me that they're similar to Chinese cabbage, which I haven't seen for decades. There's even a similar texture and taste.</div><div><br /></div><div>Back to business...</div><div>I googled endives and found a variety of recipes, cooked and raw, plus some warnings. I even asked friends, who also warned... that they're bitter. Honestly, I didn't find them bitter at all. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_20AptT9hrPj70vj6eZ7PdrkVqVNsLAXxmnpEYkJpFwsKheRzsOs_A_68ZAq8P5t8xaIwAlI-qNtrUTs-mjHJY3kxHL9t-cKYASPi6e0W6kSjdlmJ4mB-EfpO2SChwwQA-gAu-mFwg0oUVeSHhPf_HZ9nSk1BKyOIDqFnYkHploQmyLrp5wjR/s1124/427731564_10232877524103172_366855128507281009_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1124" data-original-width="843" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_20AptT9hrPj70vj6eZ7PdrkVqVNsLAXxmnpEYkJpFwsKheRzsOs_A_68ZAq8P5t8xaIwAlI-qNtrUTs-mjHJY3kxHL9t-cKYASPi6e0W6kSjdlmJ4mB-EfpO2SChwwQA-gAu-mFwg0oUVeSHhPf_HZ9nSk1BKyOIDqFnYkHploQmyLrp5wjR/w150-h200/427731564_10232877524103172_366855128507281009_n.jpg" width="150" /></a></div>I used the recipes I saw as "inspiration." My friends, my neighbors mostly understand the connections between the various anti-Bibi, antigovernment, anti-judicial reform crowd and the "Get the Hostages Out NOW" leadership and backers.<p></p><p>Today, when in Jerusalem, I saw other friends who just don't get it. One put up a sign demanding that the government free the hostages NOW! I told her that it bothers me, since the demand goes against the needs of the country to defeat our cruel, perverse enemies. Then she shocked me even more by insisting that putting of the sign unites everyone. I was incredulous, reminding her that it separates us. </p><p>"Follow the Money" I begged of her. I hope she thinks more about it.</p><p>After that upsetting conversation, I ran into someone who isn't a close friend. We began to talk. She loves my new necklace. We talked a little politics and discovered that we see today's issues about war, hostages etc. identically. Since I was still upset by my earlier discussions, I told her how better I now felt to know that she sees things as I do.</p><p>Yes, even jewelry can be political. Everything is political. As you should know, it's the middle of the winter, so rain is expected and needed. Rosh Chodesh morning it was raining and raining very heavily. I contacted people who work at <a href="https://a-shiloh.co.il/" target="_blank">Shiloh Hakeduma</a> to ask if we could pray in a building if the rain continues when we're scheduled to pray. Thank Gd, I was told that we'd be able to use a building.</p><p>Gd had other plans. The rain lessened and then stopped just as the women arrived. In all honesty, considering the distance to our usual spot, where it's believed that the <i>Mishkan, </i>Tabernacle had stood, I thought that it would be a good idea to pray closer to the entrance, near the building. But the other women went off and didn't hear my shouts.</p><p>The sun was shining... That does happen on a rainy day.</p><p>We got to our usual place and began to sing/pray Hallel together, and by the time we finished the rain had resumed. We huddled under the protected areas together and finished Musaf, then listened to a Bat Mitzvah girl sing "Tefilat Chanah." By the time she finished, the rain had stopped, so we were able to walk back to the visitor center of <a href="https://www.binyaminregion.org.il/ancient-shiloh/" target="_blank">Ancient Shiloh</a>.</p><p>There are lots of activities at Shiloh Hakeduma, holograph, movie, museum, tours and more. Contact 02-578-9111 or via email: <a href="mailto:visit@telShiloh.org.il">visit@telShiloh.org.il</a>. That's why I wanted to buy some sort of whole-wheat bread/pitta. They would take up less room in my fridge's limited freezer than rolls. I found a bag, but then for some inexplicable reason, I read the ingredients. Hmmm, there were all sorts of additives, and I lost my appetite for them. </p><p>So the intrepid baker, yours truly, went to the flour section and searched for whole-wheat flour. I couldn't find any. All they had were the 70% and 80% whole-wheat, but there was 100% rye flour. So, I decided to give it a try. </p><p>Just two problems. </p><p>1-Although I've been baking challah for decades, I've never baked simple bread.</p><p>2- I've never used rye flour, which I understand reacts differently from wheat.</p><p>I began googling, and most recipes had too many ingredients and seemed too complicated. Then I found <a href="https://www.virtuousbread.com/bread-recipe/how-to-make-rye-bread-a-free-recipe-from-virtuousbread-com/" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">Easy recipe for 100% rye bread</a><span style="text-align: center;"> from </span><a href="https://www.virtuousbread.com/" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">Virtuous Bread</a><span style="text-align: center;">. Nothing could be easier. It doesn't need a mixer, and it includes only four <b>ingredients</b> including a pinch of salt. Following is what I used.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">300gram flour, 250gram water (from the faucet,) tablespoon of brown sugar, pinch plus of coarse salt, Tablespoon of dehydrated yeast.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">The only <b>equipment</b> you need:</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">a large bowl, two big mixing spoons, measuring cups and a "loaf" pan for baking</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Directions:</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">In the large bow mix yeast in the water. Leave it a few minutes, until the yeast liquifies.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Add the flour and salt to the water, mix. I had to add more water. You'll get a sticky gob, but don't worry. You don't have to knead the dough. Keep mixing with the spoons.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">When the mush is mixed, pour (using the two spoons) it into the loaf pan. Instead of greasing the pan I used baking paper. </span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Then let it sit at least two hours, covered loosely by a plastic bag. Don't bake until it fills the pan and seems to have a least doubled.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Bake at 200C for about 40 minutes. I think that next time I'll lower it to about 170 once it looks crusty and then keep baking an baking.</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">When it's ready, have it cool on a rack. After I made my sandwiches I sliced the remaining. </span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">I made my </span></p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgXd_URDyH3qUoRrENHz7Vmo5k2ohY_0IpjV7W8wl1qsjWoizIfy0vn3mlMOQaN191zesNYGxQocX21V1Gcds23Gs1lrZaHz2BCJTN_B1rQpcvp2oT43592Izv6SdGz8TJnio4TS8L5xVcrviLG41jvhoHD0YRqM45WXmlGmdcTbOPcn3s0goXF" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgXd_URDyH3qUoRrENHz7Vmo5k2ohY_0IpjV7W8wl1qsjWoizIfy0vn3mlMOQaN191zesNYGxQocX21V1Gcds23Gs1lrZaHz2BCJTN_B1rQpcvp2oT43592Izv6SdGz8TJnio4TS8L5xVcrviLG41jvhoHD0YRqM45WXmlGmdcTbOPcn3s0goXF=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here's the rye bread, recipe note on top</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p>This must be the world's easiest bread recipe. Considering that I frequently get lost early on trying to remember the various characters when reading a book, I found this format very helpful. <p></p></div><div>The book begins with the unexpected reappearance of Adele Pinsky who had run away as a teenager sixty-four 64 years earlier. No one is more shocked and excited by her return than her younger brother Howard, who is celebrating his seventy-fifth 74th birthday when she suddenly calls him up and announces that she's coming for a visit. </div><div><br /></div><div>Adele keeps many of her secrets to the end, and she's the only main character who doesn't have a chapter, nary a one. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzxTgDoIgLl9mtpUSG__dViijQyFTGvog2ekVtU8u4WVsODpcMxs1ouEO_MDX5Dr5lqh7vcXFWpU0LvcjEFmY7mt3QswVrdpGnxkbBzGlDXPCElZ2uFkxa4Ht72gnOxwWLSjsG1FAZUZdY4W6rOP-T2mnOb6PJwFiaWfVc13ev8ismcVy_WHg6/s1360/61DxR4sDQJL._SL1360_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1360" data-original-width="880" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzxTgDoIgLl9mtpUSG__dViijQyFTGvog2ekVtU8u4WVsODpcMxs1ouEO_MDX5Dr5lqh7vcXFWpU0LvcjEFmY7mt3QswVrdpGnxkbBzGlDXPCElZ2uFkxa4Ht72gnOxwWLSjsG1FAZUZdY4W6rOP-T2mnOb6PJwFiaWfVc13ev8ismcVy_WHg6/s320/61DxR4sDQJL._SL1360_.jpg" width="207" /></a>Family dynamics among the Pinsky family undergoes understandable changes as they get to know Adele. She also gets to know them and tries to find her place after a two generation absence. Howard even has grandchildren older than he had been when his big sister Adele had suddenly left.</div><div><br /></div><div>Either the elder Pinskys weren't sure of the where/why Adele had left or they hid the truth from young Howard by saying that she was off to "join the circus," apparently their euphemism for risky adventure.<br /><br /></div><div>It didn't take many pages before I was totally caught up with the members of the Pinsky family, their various trials, tribulations and wonderful closeness. They're definitely a family that cares about each other making the sixty-four year absence especially painful.</div><div><br /></div><div>I could barely put the book down and then was so terribly disappointed when I realized that I had read the very last page... I wanted to read more about the Pinskys. </div><div><br /></div><div>Deborah Kalb wrote a fantastic book. This week is the the last of the season. Most of us would love another week, but this has already been the longest season ever. </p><p>Not only do we have "separate swimming" only, but the day begins and ends with 18+ adults only. That makes it a super pleasure. Our pool is very social, at least during Women's hours. No, we don't laze around on lounge chairs. We chat as we exercise in the water. Of course there are some serious swimmers, who are busy swimming laps, but many of us exercise with our heads above water most of the time. I'm going to miss the socializing as well as the water exercise.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidZhi0jnxOB1RHD2eIGJj6WYaog1VTr_A5Dg7s9bQTnde3gGeBdEJNHb5GYpqZu60SYoDUHUQD7I9uWiahenHzX3WZtJKM3r-7W2Lb7sFJIle862pL13Zx7N7Psm3NHvDnKf8vsdlG9dq9imk16RmQbay6yaIx6rHAFLB7xKpkAEXyjugP3Pk9/s1080/376720678_10231903071422464_6559354935733772969_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1080" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidZhi0jnxOB1RHD2eIGJj6WYaog1VTr_A5Dg7s9bQTnde3gGeBdEJNHb5GYpqZu60SYoDUHUQD7I9uWiahenHzX3WZtJKM3r-7W2Lb7sFJIle862pL13Zx7N7Psm3NHvDnKf8vsdlG9dq9imk16RmQbay6yaIx6rHAFLB7xKpkAEXyjugP3Pk9/w400-h300/376720678_10231903071422464_6559354935733772969_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">We can change the world!</div>Batyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09402874037427009327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8476955.post-66543754936598688752023-08-26T21:56:00.000+03:002023-08-26T21:56:46.793+03:00 Body and Soul: The Torah Path to Health, Fitness, and a Holy Life<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPNPYEsbU6vnLQzXYseA2JPV8DdPGoNFVArlIYVEshy6rIOktA0GegvmHHYWpTPNFVm5EenJgO0GZuH7_1qCcs9grO8MQsbNf-I6UW8w6TUwI5QmMQ-CJtHW62ZEGIjZgV8LxCzH_wVwMh8_ckdDNmPGNFLVeqKczsmjS8IAB4gJycJXmRL7Ka/s499/51O4q+M5e5L._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPNPYEsbU6vnLQzXYseA2JPV8DdPGoNFVArlIYVEshy6rIOktA0GegvmHHYWpTPNFVm5EenJgO0GZuH7_1qCcs9grO8MQsbNf-I6UW8w6TUwI5QmMQ-CJtHW62ZEGIjZgV8LxCzH_wVwMh8_ckdDNmPGNFLVeqKczsmjS8IAB4gJycJXmRL7Ka/s320/51O4q+M5e5L._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" width="215" /></a></div><b><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Body-Soul-Torah-health-fitness/dp/1680259156">Body and Soul: The Torah Path to Health, Fitness, and a Holy Life</a> </b>by Rabbi Alexander Seinfeld (Author), Dr. Daniel Grove MD (Author) is a good practical book about getting healthier despite being part of a culture and society that promotes overeating. <div><br /></div><div>Yes, I said it. Traditional Jewish life, nowadays isn't very healthy, and to be honest secular life isn't any better. One big difference is that eating plays a major part in Jewish Life, and most people would be embarrassed to serve a meal that looks "frugal," which can be a negative way of describing a healthy meal or kiddush.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Body and Soul</b> conveniently includes an extensive section with the calorie count of favorite Jewish foods including things like gefilte fish and kreplach.</div><div><br /></div><div>Personally, I've spent my entire life trying to keep my weight down, and usually failing, though I don't eat the sort of menu Seinfeld and Grove consider typical. I hate to think of what I would look like <i style="font-weight: bold;">and my health</i> if I ate that typical high sugar and fat menu.</div><div><br /></div><div>Early in <b>Body and Soul</b> we read of the dangers of sugars, yes, there are many different kinds, and the many seemingly "healthy" foods <i>rich</i> in it. Rabbi Seinfeld and Dr. Grove also explain how to calculate the amount of calories each individual needs to maintain present weight and a realistic amount to reduce to lose weight safely. <br /><p>Because food and ritual eating is such an intrinsic part of Judaism, <b>Body and Soul</b> definitely has a market. Rabbi Seinfeld and Dr. Grove have written a very Jewish diet guide including typical, for many frum people, Shabbat/Chag menus, including what one noshes on at a kiddush. If you pencil in the calorie counts (from the guide at the end of the book) next to what you normally eat and then add it up, the chances are that you'd be horrified.</p><p>My most successful weight loss periods were when I kept a food chart, writing down what and how much I ate, plus the calorie counts. If you use a smart phone, that may be the best tool. There's probably an app which will make it easier. Rabbi Seinfeld and Dr. Grove also say that you really must know and keep track of what you eat. One of their tips is not to take second portions. For many people that makes a big difference in total calorie intake. And your total calorie intake is what's most important.</p><p>I would just like to add one of my suggestions. Simplify what you serve; make life easier and healthier. Don't give too many choices, because most people will try everything and eat more than they should. Serve just one carbohydrate. There's no reason to have both potato kugel and roasted potatoes. If you follow the custom of two and three kugel Shabbat, make spinach kugel, carrot kugel, along with either a noodle or potato kugel. There's no need to have three types of fleishik. One's enough, especially if you've started the meal with the first course of fish. Make lots of fresh salad and a choice of simple vegetables, no sugar/jam/honey added. </p><p><b>Body and Soul: The Torah Path to Health, Fitness, and a Holy Life</b> is a very readable book and can really help people by opening their eyes and making them aware of what's in the food they eat. I recommend it as a very good start in improving one's and one's family's life and health.</p><h2 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111; line-height: 32px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 4px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;">Product details</span></h2><div id="detailBullets_feature_div" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0f1111;"><ul class="a-unordered-list a-nostyle a-vertical a-spacing-none detail-bullet-list" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 1px 18px; padding: 0px;"><li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 5.5px; overflow-wrap: break-word;"><span class="a-list-item" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="a-text-bold" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700 !important;">Publisher : </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Jewish Spiritual Literacy Press (June 1, 2023)</span></span></span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 5.5px; overflow-wrap: break-word;"><span class="a-list-item" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="a-text-bold" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700 !important;">Language : </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">English</span></span></span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 5.5px; overflow-wrap: break-word;"><span class="a-list-item" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="a-text-bold" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700 !important;">Paperback : </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">510 pages</span></span></span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 5.5px; overflow-wrap: break-word;"><span class="a-list-item" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="a-text-bold" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700 !important;">ISBN-10 : </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">1680259156</span></span></span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 5.5px; overflow-wrap: break-word;"><span class="a-list-item" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="a-text-bold" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700 !important;">ISBN-13 : </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">978-1680259155</span></span></span></li></ul></div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer">We can change the world!</div>Batyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09402874037427009327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8476955.post-33566631407729985832023-08-14T07:20:00.000+03:002023-08-14T07:20:17.740+03:00Theater in The Rough, Shakespeare in Jerusalem <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Last night night I joined many at the performance by <a href="https://theaterintherough.co.il/">Theater in The Rough</a> of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. It was fantastic despite the heat. Actually they started it at 6pm, a half hour later than usual, for the comfort of the actors and audience. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The location is the Blumfield Park, which is "under" King David Street, closer to the Yemin Moshe end. The scenes are in a few nearby parts of the park, each a short walk from each other. Most people bring folding chairs, stools or blankets for sitting, though you can rent a very comfortable folding chair for only NS30, which I did. There are still more opportunities to see the play: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><blockquote>Julius Caesar: in motion – August 8-24, 2023</blockquote></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There is no required ticket price, though NS40 is recommended, and they're grateful for any donation, more or less.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here are a few photos I took at last night's performance. On one hand I was happy that I had made a quick and easy connect between my bus and the one enters Jerusalem near where I had to catch a bus and the fact that I didn't have time for a "pit stop" between buses.<p></p><p>After crossing the wide, complicated main road out of Jerusalem, I found myself admiring the lovely shade that seemed pretty new. Actually, the whole bus stop across from the road into Givat Shaul had looked unrecognizable. Then I turned around and suddenly saw the prefab public toilets that looked rather new. I quickly checked the <a href="https://www.efobus.com/" target="_blank">efobus</a> app and saw that I had five minutes, so I ran into the "ladies." It was clean smelling, equipped with paper and soap, but I was afraid to spend time photographing. So you'll have to take my word for it.<br /></p><p>We must thank Mayor Moshe Lion for having so many new public toilets installed in Jerusalem and also making sure they're kept clean.</p><p>If you have some additional ones I should know of, please tell me in the comments, thanks.</p><div class="blogger-post-footer">We can change the world!</div>Batyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09402874037427009327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8476955.post-60630764050777476242023-06-26T21:20:00.003+03:002023-07-04T06:42:03.998+03:00Kiko, New Meat Restaurant in Armon Hanatziv near Arnona<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOvHoYTUk7V4oOat9lXuUDO-4XrHiT2saOrucdNfmsdJGrQZtlBOXuzqq_Tw2R2lLeQEpgq4o8o8yc_jvZ6mNUI6LsKXjKJzFH3lABsXLYHmf2R-oKQWVxgtexcwYm5VtDLgKP5MTdVUiMEpBYscQ-ZfCjoYSX2JjTlQiudGCdPXksYXkfKEeF/s4624/20230620_194223.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3468" data-original-width="4624" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOvHoYTUk7V4oOat9lXuUDO-4XrHiT2saOrucdNfmsdJGrQZtlBOXuzqq_Tw2R2lLeQEpgq4o8o8yc_jvZ6mNUI6LsKXjKJzFH3lABsXLYHmf2R-oKQWVxgtexcwYm5VtDLgKP5MTdVUiMEpBYscQ-ZfCjoYSX2JjTlQiudGCdPXksYXkfKEeF/w400-h300/20230620_194223.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Kiko</b> Meat Restaurant, </div><div><div style="text-align: center;">15 Daniel Yanovsky St, Armon Hanatziv, Jerusalem, </div><div><div style="text-align: center;">Tel: 0778836883 Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalayim Mehadrin</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNFLPKWylbcVrLaGRZymIWOuwODA1eoRdqi7JeNMGyr_SAq11w7NBtf9TTjUtZIIOVw2S_N3jrWH9j_K1Dj2YL5k7x6ytMITZrDZy0R2OjpXhuW8ge_LYZrREyLfl-Wa5BJ9Oame23qtrGJvc-DA3GBxb_ZVc1FFEkghfvVi5VEObH8UXMZoIx/s4624/20230620_191137.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3468" data-original-width="4624" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNFLPKWylbcVrLaGRZymIWOuwODA1eoRdqi7JeNMGyr_SAq11w7NBtf9TTjUtZIIOVw2S_N3jrWH9j_K1Dj2YL5k7x6ytMITZrDZy0R2OjpXhuW8ge_LYZrREyLfl-Wa5BJ9Oame23qtrGJvc-DA3GBxb_ZVc1FFEkghfvVi5VEObH8UXMZoIx/s320/20230620_191137.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Last week my friend and I decided to eat out, and she had recently read Eluna email and noticed a write-up about a new meat restaurant not far from where where we were.
