Old Cure for Earaches

Years ago some Olim from Russia taught me their method to cure ear infections. There wasn't much medicine in the USSR.

Heat coarse salt in a frying pan. Put it in a cotton or wool sock, and place it as a warm compress on your ear.

  1. Well, here in the U.S. of A., with our overload of medicines, doctors usually throw antibiotics at us for ear infections.

I was fortunate to skip ear infections with my older children, but my daughter got one when she was 1 1/2. The doctor gave me antibiotics, to which she got a rash (this happened to me, too, when I was a teen). So we switched antibiotics. A few months later she gets pneumonia, and needs to go to the hospital. The doctor there explained to me that she really needed the antibiotics. Then a month later, her stomach got all messed up. We had her treated by Dr. Schick, our local chiropracter and guru of other medicines. Dr. Schick said the messed up stomach was due to the antibiotics.

Three years later, when she again got an ear infection, we went the chiropractic route to avoid the antibiotics. She got much healthier. But now the bills for the chiropractic treatment are coming in...

Sorry for being so long winded. Maybe the Russian idea is a good one!

  3. Leora, doc,
I've, bli eyin haraa, been blessed with general good health. I remember one ear infection, which came as I recovered from the flu a number of years ago. I was so hysterical from my general weakness and pain that I took anti-biotics and suffered for months from pressure in my ears because the antibiotics leave the fluid build up.
Since then, I use the salt, and B"H.
Yes, there are situations when one needs antibiotics, but not every time.

  4. Turns out that my problem isn't an infection. When I flew to Florida a couple of weeks ago, I was congested. The messed up pressure has built over the past couple of weeks to give me this wonderful sensation (worse than childbirth... at least then there's an end in sight). Lots of fluid in my ear, but no infection. I'm taking an oral steroid which should royally mess me up, but hopefully will alleviate the swelling and pain.
