Shiloh Celebrating 37!

My community, town of Shiloh is celebrating thirty-seven 37 years of renewed existance as a Jewish city. There are a number of events planned. Some have already happened and others will be soon.

On Friday night the "young" alte kockas, meaning the "45+" crowd was offered a joint Shabbat dinner. OK, we paid for it and the catered food was awful, but it was nice to get together. Over dessert, (mostly dried) fruit, nuts and other goodies, we were joined by whomever else wanted for words of Torah and memories of the earlier, more challenging days of modern Shiloh.

There was another get-together early Shabbat afternoon when neighbors told their amazing stories. A bit later, during the Bnai Akiva youth movement activities I went over to the "snif," clubhouse, (just across from my house) and told all the kids stories about early days in the neighborhood here, since we're among the original families, having moved here September 1, 1981.

Then after Shabbat there was an enormous get-together. The Yeshivat Shiloh Dining Room was packed. We were seated by neighborhoods and "age." I was in the "very alte kockas table." I think we were all 60+. Here are some photos:

Each group was requested to choose a "Person of the Year," someone who can always be relied on to help and organize help for all the neighbors. We alte kockas, who helped raise and educate Shiloh youth over the decades, were pleased to see that most of the recipients of the honor were home-grown, yes, second generation Shiloh residents. They were chosen by their neighbors, not by us! We must have done something right! No doubt the holiness in the air of this very special Biblical location also has an influence over all of the wonderful people who have grown up here, wherever they live now.
