White Rabbit Beer with Israeli-Grown Hops

Last night I attended a fascinating and enjoyable event at which White Rabbit Beer introduced its new truly Israeli beer. Instead of imported hops, the hops are locally grown. 

We all came White Rabbit by public transportation, which is easy from Jerusalem and Shiloh via Ariel. There are lots of buses and even the Tel Aviv lightrail. The special festival continues right now until 4pm.

Shuk Habira שוק הבירה Beer Festival at Jaffa Port

 

Last Thursday, I joined the crew of beer tasters led by our intrepid tireless leader, Doug Greener, the beer maven on a trip to Jaffa Port for the best and most professional Israeli craft beer festival I've ever attended, Shuk Habira שוק הבירה WWW.BEER-MARKET.CO.IL.

I must admit that I had been a bit wary about what seemed like such a long trip from Shiloh via Jerusalem train and then a taxi from the Tel Aviv stop on the nice modern train. Thank Gd it was pleasant, the traveling and of course the company. Even the trip home to Shiloh worked out well, thanks to Gd for providing miraculous bus to train and to bus connections.

To be honest, we were treated as valuable VIPs by the management, but if the setup and/or beer had been awful, I wouldn't be praising it like I am.

There were various tasting options, reasonably priced for which you got a cup and coupons. 

If you're looking for a really good summer beer, try Ronen's B'DAY 13. It's fruity but not too sweet. I'd say it's like a cocktail, but a lot healthier. Give it a try.

I tasted more than a half a dozen different beers plus mead. This was my second, if I remember correctly, time tasting mead. The first was at a beer festival in Jerusalem's First Station, and I told them that I had remembered enjoying the mead greatly. I decided to let them choose which mead. It was very tasty, but more for winter than summer. 

This was for sure a very "only in Israel" scene. Yes, this baby was strapped to his father, the brewer. Yes, a devoted, enthusiastic father is also a beer brewer, Goren's Brewery, which I definitely recommend, great beer and a nice family. 

I was very happy to be able to taste some White Rabbit beers. We had visited their brewery last year. Since they're very careful about quality control, keeping the beers chilled, you can't find them all over, only at pubs and shops that are willing to follow their storage and serving recommendations.

Schnitt's COCONUT beer was much better than I had expected. I had once had a coconut flavored beer that seemed too fatty, but Schnitt's was very good. If you have a chance to get some, give it a try.

Ever since we had tasted a guava flavored beer at BeerBazaar's craft beer festival at Kfar Daniel, I've been craving more. It's the best fruit to flavor beer. It takes a strong fruit like the guava to do beer justice. Yes, I know that many people don't like guava, but I think that's why it's good with a strong beer. This beer with the line and guava was great, too.

These beer-flavored candies were also a treat. There were a few different flavors. Yes, LolliHop's the name, a very punny play on the words and key ingredient of beer.

Even at an enjoyable beer festival like this one, we can't avoid the fact that Israel's at war. No, we didn't hear sirens and run for shelter. One of the breweries is named for Tomer, who was one of the first soldiers killed on October 7, 2023. This is how he has been memorialized. 

Drink a "l'chaim" to Tomer and all those others murdered by the Gazan Hamas terrorists.

WHITE RABBIT's Day Dream's a Dream

WHITE RABBIT invited the Beer Maven, Doug Greener. and the tasting crew -including yours truly, plus Jerusalem Post staff to its Tel Aviv brewery last week. We got onboard the train in Jerusalem and in no time we were in Tel Aviv. 

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I had been in Tel Aviv and hadn't a clue as to where in Tel Aviv we'd be. I trusted Doug to find the way to the brewery. And I certainly had never taken the train to Tel Aviv, though a friend and I once took it for free to Ben Gurion Airport when it was in "the running-in period." 

After leaving the train station, we needed a couple of stops on a bus, and there we were in their spic and span white and polished brewery. Just know that it wasn't in the neighborhood of fancy geometric modernistic skyscrapers. 

We were treated to some fresh salads and a variety of their beers. 

In addition we received a tour of the brewery with lots of explanations and stories from those in charge.

As you can see in the photos, White Rabbit's equipment looks very impressive. To preserve the quality of their beer they only sell to shops and pubs that promise to keep the beer cooled, rather than just cooling before serving. 

It was explained to us that their beer is a natural drink without chemicals to keep it stable and fresh-tasting. I prefer beer over wine, since wine has sulfites which aren't good for me.

The three beers we tasted were all versions of IPA, including a NEIPA, and by the time we left I couldn't really distinguish any differences. The only thing I knew for sure was that all the White Rabbit beers we tasted were delicious, Day Dream 5%, Ten Feet Tall 7% and Feed Your Head which is the NEIPA 7%.

Since we were given gift packs of their beers to take home, I decided to drink them on their own to get a better feel for the flavor. On Shabbat I drank Day Dream, which has a nice strong fruity aroma. The taste was flavorful, perfect for a summer morning, and the low-ish alcohol content was good, too.

Beer Tasting- Israeli Craft Beer, Great Selection

A couple of weeks ago, Beer Maven Doug Greener invited me to a beer tasting. Joining us were two much younger tasters, so each bottle of beer had to be split between the four of us. And in case you're wondering, yes, the Beer בירה mosaics was made by yours truly.

I'll start with Alexander's "DON'T" which we didn't drink at the tasting. I was given a bottle to taste at home. It's a nice tasting IPA. The name "DON'T" is in honor of the American president's statement, but I'm not going to start with politics... 

I must admit that my favorite beer is a good IPA. "DON'T" wasn't the best IPA I've sampled, but it still had a nice fruity plus hops flavor. I enjoyed it much more than the beers from the big commercial breweries that are sold in our local store.

IPA's must be very popular with Israel's craft beer brewers, because White Rabbit gave us two very refreshing ones. 

Feed Your Head is a light and fruity IPA. Day Dream is a New England IPA, less bitter but sweeter.

You can see the lovely golden color. Both are highly recommended.

We got a lager, named Bock from Alexander. It's a gorgeous dark orange color with a fruity aroma. As I sipped it, I realized that it doesn't taste like a beer and may be a good beer for those who don't like beer. After hearing my opinion on it, Doug called in someone who doesn't like beer. She took a couple of sips and agreed with me. 

Bock is like a tart fruit soda for adults, with the kick of some alcohol. If you like to taste the hops in your beer this isn't for you. 

Hatch brewed a beer it calls הגינה של רוחל'ה HaGinah Shel Ruchala, Ruchala's Garden which has a surprisingly natural mango aroma. Even the color is more like mango juice than beer. It tasted like a spiked sour citrus fruit juice. 

Previously I didn't like fruity beers, because they all seemed to taste artificial, like children's medicine. I'm still traumatized by the fruit flavored beers at the Jerusalem Beer Festival 2019. The more recent attempts to flavor beer with fruit is much more natural tasting. I'd prefer them to a sweet wine.

And then we had what could be called a "dessert beer." Hatch brewed an amazing Chocolate-Maple beer. It's almost a liquor, and I insisted that it would be great with a strong vanilla or coconut ice cream. 

This beer may also appeal to those who insist that they don't like beer.

In all honesty, the selection was the best ever. I don't remember a tasting when I enjoyed all the beers. OK, some didn't quite taste like beer, but they are all very drinkable. None tasted "funny." Try to buy them. 

Israeli craft beers are getting better and better. That's for sure.
