Yes, I ate too much fruit today. My meals were fine, and at the kiddush I had some herring. But my friend who "eats raw" brought the most delicious apple pie. The crust was nuts and dates all soaked and chopped with some other stuff, and the filling was full of fresh apple slices and cinnamon. It was a giant pie and I just finished it off.
And that wasn't the only fruit I ate.
My weekly shiur, Bible Class, was in my house. I cut up lots of fruit: two types of grapefruit, red and pink, an orange, apples and a banana. We ate them with toothpicks on napkins. It was a popular snack. Nobody touched the cake! It certainly is easy to entertain "healthy."
Before I changed my way of eating when I began the Start Fresh Diet a year ago, I didn't snack much and ate little fruit. It was so hard for me to get used to enforced snacking. Now it's all natural, and I'm over 35 lbs (16 kilo) less than I was when I started. Losing weight was lots easier than I could imagine. Of course, I hope to lose more, but if I stay what I presently weigh, that would be fine, too.
I've ended up on a modified low carbohydrate diet. It suits me and my blood type. There are weeks when I make vegetable soup and end up eating lots more carbs than usual, but it's not the end of the world, and modern diet experts say that you should vary calorie intake.
It's good that I've finished that pie, so I can stop thinking about it.

Weight Loss Momentum Lost
Actually, the situation is worse than that. I've gained back a bit in the last month since I stopped working. So now, I have to get back on track, change gears and figure out how to at least keep status quo, the weight off.
I'm trying to exercise more, even though it must be at night when my husband is home. I'm trying to restrict fruit to three a day, like the Start Fresh Diet Plan requires. I have to focus on what's best for me, while I care for my elderly father.
At least I can get out once a week or even more. And my father is doing well here. Next we have to arrange to bring my mother. I wish there was a reasonably priced senior citizens home, which provides all meals in Jerusalem with some activities in English.

There's Nothing Like Dieting To Make People Gain Weight!
I used to refuse to even think of dieting for just that reason. Say the word, and I was hungry!
Then I learned the trick, adjusted the diet I got from Start Fresh and I began to lose weight. I sure don't feel like I'm dieting. Of course, there are things I don't eat, but I don't feel deprived refusing them. I eat so many other foods which fill me up and keep me satisfied.
I'm not the only person touting the method. I find more and more articles refuting the old mantra which proclaimed:
Now, it's:
Veteran dieters have trouble with the idea that they shouldn't suffer. I see that among the women I counsel. That's what makes diet coaching so challenging.
You must eat enough proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates to lose weight. And you must eat every few hours, like a newborn baby. And newborns should eat every two hours most of the time, like many babies demand. The four hour schedule which many of us were forced on may have set us up for our present weight problems. Even three hours, for many infants, isn't frequent enough.

The 25 Pound Milestone!
Yes! I'm twenty-five pounds, or about twelve kilo less than I was about a half a year ago when I went on the Start Fresh Diet. I finished their basic five week program, and now I'm continuing eating well, never hungry and still losing weight!
At this point, I don't think it's good to say I'm "on a diet." I try to explain that I've changed my eating habits, and that's how I'm losing weight. If I ever went back to my previous food choices, the weight would rapidly return.
My basic diet is the one I learned form Start Fresh.
I'm half way down to where I'd like to be, but I don't know if my body will get that thin. I'm just as curious as you.

Just What I Had Wanted To Hear: "You look awful in that skirt!"
Really!
I'm not being sarcastic, facetious, ironic or anything like that. After five months of the Start Fresh weight loss diet, I was waiting for some "hints" that I had ought to retire my "straight" skirts.
It has been bothering me that even with 23 pounds, or 10 kilos off, I can still wear the same clothes. The skirts aren't falling off. OK, most do have at least some elastic, even the zippered ones. So I guess that I just don't stretch the elastic as much as before.
I really was happy to hear my friend tell me how ridiculous I look in the skirt, that it just hangs on me like a badly fitted sack.
Today, I wore a relatively new skirt. I bought it barely a year ago. It's an A-Line, with an elastic waste. It cost a lot of money. It doesn't feel the same as I remember. I remember "filling it out." Now it just hangs.
I'm supposed to feel happy, but being that I'm less than half way through my weight loss, --don't say "diet!-- I know that this isn't the time for a totally new wardrobe, as if I could afford one. I just need to weed through my closets and take out the big of the clothes and leave what still looks OK. I must spend as little as possible, because G-d willing by next summer I'll be at least another size or more smaller.
Let's just call this the "problems of the rich." No, I'm not "rich in money." Thank G-d my "changes in eating" are paying off, and I'm losing weight. I shouldn't complain.

Blogging About Losing Weight #3
I've been blogging about losing weight ever since I began my diet a few months ago. Actually, I don't like calling it a diet, since diets are temporary solutions to permanent problems, and we need permanent solutions.
I felt like Pavlov's dogs. At the sound of the word "diet," I'd get hungry! Nobody can be more surprised than me that over 22 pounds, ten kilo are already off, since I started Start Fresh. Even after going "slightly off" the diet during Passover, I lost almost a pound. If you cook, you should know that there are lots of low calorie foods which can be made in the oven. Ovens aren't just for cakes and cookies. And ignorance is not bliss when dieting. I finally bought myself a digital scale, so I don't have to go to a neighbor to weigh myself.

Dieting On Passover, No Problem
It just occurred to me the other day, that I shouldn't have any problem with my diet on Pesach, besides seder night.
I've been on a combination of Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet and the Blood Type Diet for a few months now and I've lost seventeen (17) pounds, close to eight kilo, already.
Since I'm Type O, I avoid grains and carbohydrates. That leaves me with protein and all sorts of vegetables, even those like carrots and onions which are considered sugary. I no longer eat my life-long favorite food, noodles. All the pasta in the pantry has been ignored. No bread, no sandwiches, no bulgar and no rice. If I have lentils, they're in a soup. I also eat fruit and bio yogurts.
Yes, I eat and I eat plenty of food. I try never to allow myself to get hungry. That's one of the key things. When I travel, I take a yogurt, fruit and salad. When I eat out, I don't eat any starch.
My "test" for whether a food is bad for me is very simple:
Does eating it satisfy me, satiate my appetite, or do I just want to eat more and more of it?
If it stimulates my appetite it's bad for me. I feel hungrier after a slice of bread or a "portion" of noodles. That's why they're out, eliminated from my diet.
Cooked vegetables are best. I start the cooking with a bit of oil, and then I cover the pot or pan. With a good pot, you don't need to add water. The vitamins, minerals and flavor stay in.
OK, the Seder has its required foods matzah and wine or juice, but after that I shouldn't have any problem sticking to my diet to lose weight.

Me? The Dieting Diet Maiven?
Could it be?
Yes, it could
Something's coming, something good...
Well, not only have I already lost 17 pounds on my Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet, but I actually started a diet support group, and we've already met twice.
At this point, I'm not taking money. It's practice for me to see if I can really pull it off. So not only do I have a "public diet," I have people trying to imitate it. Now I have to buy a scale, since the women insist on being weighed and my keeping score.
I really like helping people and figuring out how to help them solve their problems.

To Diet or Not To Diet
As you know, I've been on a very successful weight loss diet, Start Fresh, for a few months already. So why this great rhetorical question?
Most people think of "diet" as a temporary solution to a weight problem. But if it's temporary, the problem will just return post-diet. Statistically, that's what happens to most of us.
Over the years I managed to lose weight and look great, and then... I'd gain it back plus. I got tired of following whatever rules had helped me slim down.
Now, my aim isn't a diet, it's to change my eating habits. I keep telling people that I don't feel like I'm dieting. I'm not hungry. I don't suffer from food cravings. I no longer have to preplan my day's meals. I have a pretty good picture in my mind of how many of each types of food I've eaten and have left to eat. I do not count calories and have pretty much deleted my mental calorie counter from my brain.
In a general sense I'm following Start Fresh. Its guidelines are similar to most of today's conventional weight loss diets with the added advantage for me that it takes into account Jewish Holidays and Kashrut, Jewish Dietary Laws. I've always taken the option of planning my own meals, since the sample meals don't suit me. And also, the minute someone else tells me what I must or mustn't eat, I have a physiological need to rebel.
So, on one hand, you can say that I'm on a diet, but it's not planned to be temporary. I'm working hard on permanently changing my eating, so that I'll never be obese again.
Most people think of "diet" as a temporary solution to a weight problem. But if it's temporary, the problem will just return post-diet. Statistically, that's what happens to most of us.

Interesting Diet Theory
Standard weight loss diet advice calls for a fairly identical eating plan each day. I haven't been doing it and keep wondering about the pros and cons. I eat very little starch/carbohydrates, except Shabbat. It's the only time of the week, I have bread. And I usually have some "starchy vegetable," too, like sweet potatoes, pumpkin etc. Actually, Shabbat is an entirely different meal schedule and menu.
I was surprised to find that some diet experts even recommend variation for losing weight, claiming that it keeps the metabolism going more quickly. Routine is more fattening.
I haven't seen this on Start Fresh, but they don't object to it. I have a lot of freedom in my meal planning.

Next Biggest Diet Problem
At first, my biggest diet problem was remembering to snack, a necessary requirement on the Start Fresh weight loss diet. Now, I have gotten used to snacking and realize that hunger between meals is a sign that I must have a fruit or yogurt.
So, now, I have to start reducing portion size. One of the things I really found suitable to me in Start Fresh is that there's unlimited vegetables raw and fresh of the non-starchy variety. I love to eat and ate a lot of them. Now I've reached to stage when I'm ready to eat less.
My morning omelet is now with just an onion, eggs and oil, no squash. Other meals have one vegetable, instead of two or more. I even eat less salad, since I want to shrink my appetite, and there's no need to eat a salad with every meal. My salads are also smaller.
I must admit that last week's virus helped my body get used to less food.
Dieting requires that I think about every bit of food and calculate how much I've eaten from which foods during the day. I'm using the Start Fresh site less. I'm preparing myself for real life a few sizes smaller. I've only lost about a third of what I need to lose, or more accurately what I'm willing to make an effort to lose. I wouldn't dare try to predict what weight I'll be in another year or two. I do know that I must get used to an entirely different eating regime. That's not a temporary diet. I must not revert to how I ate before this diet, because if I do, the weight will return.

And The New Grand Total Is.....
....nu...
I was hoping to find a dramatic drum roll on youtube...
7 kilo or 15.5 pounds less than when I started!! And please don't ask how many more until my "goal!"
This Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet isn't bad at all. I never thought I could do it. Not that I'm even close to my goal, but still. I would never have even tried if Steve of webads hadn't offered me the deal.
There's nothing more encouraging like success, so I'm continuing with the diet to lose weight, G-d willing.

Did I Need Lunch!
One of the laws in the Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet is never to feel hungry, and yesterday, by the time I made it to the bus station, customer support should have had me arrested.
I was thirsty, too, even though I drank a lot of water at my friend's place in the morning and again after the Matan lecture. Actually, by the time I picked up my new glasses in the center of town I was hungry but wanted to get to the bus station first. Many diet experts say that exercise increases metabolism so that what you eat post-workout is worth fewer calories. Besides that, I was afraid that I'd feel "too heavy and satisfied" after eating to walk.
I walked the kilometer or more with a very heavy backpack strapped to my back. I needed to buy myself some water in the discount supermarket near the bus station, and I figured I could save money by buying low-fat cheese and veggies. Also, I need some hat "yarn." I'm sure you've heard that shopping should never be done when hungry, couldn't make a decision, so walked out of the yarn store empty-handed.
At the supermarket, I cracked a six-pack of water, just taking one small bottle and then headed for the cheese. Each little package was over ns10 and chock full of salt and the sort of "milk solids" I don't like, so I just paid for the water and headed back to the bus station.
Cafe` Net was my first stop. I checked out their salads. NS21 for a big bowl and had them add tuna (sans mayonnaise,) a hard boiled egg and some olives.

Delicious! Half was eaten in the shop and the other half on the bus. I couldn't have made a more satisfying or less expensive lunch on the go.
The most difficult lesson I've learned from this diet is that you have to eat to lose weight. OK, maybe I should have totally ignored the dessert at the wedding, but I only polished off the fruit part, nibbled at the sorbet and I did ignore the chocolate cake...

Hard To Believe
I have another pound off, and I don't even feel like I'm dieting. If somebody would have told me that such a thing was possible, I'd have him/her tested for hallucinogens.
Such siyate d'shmaya, the hand of G-d, in this. With the wrong diet, I would have gone off within the first twelve or less hours.
Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet, is definitely the type of diet I can stick to. I'm allowed unlimited vegetables of those not considered carbohydrates. I love cooked vegetables, sauteed with a bit of oil and cooked in a covered pot. I don't add liquid at all, so all the vitamins and minerals are there to be eaten.
I've noticed that I'm eating less in terms of total quantities. Portion control will be the key to losing weight pretty soon. That's when "unlimited" is really too much. But it all must be gradual. Maybe I should invest in a slightly smaller frying pan for my "big meals." I have a small one and a large one. Medium would be a good idea. The problem is that I don't really have the money to spend right now.
OK, it's Friday, time to close down blogging for a bit and get into the kitchen. Shabbat is approaching and there's also laundry to hang out.

Don't Forget The Turkey
In Israel we can easily buy turkey parts; whole turkeys aren't the standard.
When I was the cook in our local pre-school, infants to three year olds, day care center, we had a cooking workshop about turkey. Apparently, it has close to the iron of beef with much less fat. It's more like chicken.
I frequently buy ground turkey meat and use it for meatballs and meatloaf. It has more flavor than chicken, too.
Another turkey treat is drum sticks (legs) and wings. I used to just cook up the drum sticks, but since some people found it too generous a portion, I now buy the wings, which is a much better deal. The percentage of meat to bone is better, making it less expensive per serving. The wings are cut and much, much meatier than chicken wings, which are just lots of skin, bones and feathers.
Yesterday I cooked up a package of drum sticks and a package of wings, turkey of course. I added an onion, paprika and enough red wine so it wouldn't burn. Since I'm on Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet, I didn't put in dried fruit, raisins and prunes. The sugar per serving from the wine is negligible, since there was hardly any wine.
I don't cook vegetables in the meat, because it will absorb too much fat, and I eat only minimal starch, so carbohydrates don't get added either.

Another Reason Not To Get Very Thin
I am happy that I'm losing weight on Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet, but I don't really want or expect to become very, very thin. If I do, I'll look much older for sure.
My aim is to get as much weight off as comes off without major effort. And now I just read an article saying that when identical twins have been different weights, the heavier one looks younger. I noticed that with a neighbor and her sister, but I thought it was just them. Now I know that it's a documented fact. If I had known that before my diet, it would have had been another excuse not to diet.
It would have been a very foolish excuse at best. I'm glad to get some of this extra weight off. As I've mentioned before, my kids are so supportive, it gives me the impression that they really want me to lose the weight and probably have for a long, long time.

And Another Pound Off!
Baruch Hashem, Thank G-d!
The Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet is still working, or better said, I'm still eating according to its guidelines.
In all honesty, if I ate all I was permitted to eat, I'd gain weight. Some of my reasoning behind that statement is that, it's more than I ever used to eat, sort of. But also, I'm not that young, nor that active. I must eat less than I once did.
Many of the permitted carbohydrates, especially the wheat products, cause me to lose control. I'm OK with the starchy vegetables. I can have my portion, most probably because they're part of a food. But I can eat outrageous quantities of pasta, or pita dipped in olive oil. I can finish off an entire family-size Yemenite pitta, especially if there's olive oil on the table, too. Challah doesn't do it to such an extent, even with olive oil. If I get started on bread and butter, there's no end, until the bread gives out.
I'll have some challah on Shabbat, and that should end the "craving." But if this is a craving, I'll just have to have some bread, and then the craving will go away. One suffers cravings if we're missing a "food type." On Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet I haven't , I haven't been craving. Actually, I'm permitted bread, but I just don't eat it. So, maybe tomorrow I should.
It's really good that I lost another pound. I made more of an effort to eat this week. The previous week, I was hungry, and I didn't lose weight.
I must clean up the house. Guests are coming for Shabbat, the grandkids and their parents.

The Hardest Diet Technique For Me
I was very lucky, that I found myself on Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet, because it does suit me. My extra weight isn't because I'm constantly noshing and grabbing cakes, cookies and candy. The food choices they recommend are the food I do like to eat. Unlimited salad and most cooked vegetables are my dream. I'm a three meals a day girl, and that's where I get stuck. I have trouble fitting the snacks in.
All of the modern weight loss diets stress that you must never allow yourself to get hungry, and you must eat something every three to four hours. I like three large meals a day. I'm not used to making time to eat in between meals. On occasion, I do get hungry and then I grab a fruit, but a day like yesterday, even though I had those gorgeous oranges on the table, I never took one. Nor did I take an apple or yogurt. The closest was a cup of coffee at a neighbor's. I could count that as my substitute for the yogurt I had planned. It did postpone my lunch appetite for a couple of hours.
At least I got in a two kilometer plus walk, early evening.

Cold or Hot Outside, Relax and Read HH and Blog for Other Carnivals
That's right, Havel Havelim is up at Ima's.
I'm being lazy today; I don't have to babysit. The "Other Savta" is there. There may not be enough rain in the HolyLand, but there are lots of posts to read on the internet. Not totally lazy, I hosted an exercise class to Richard Simmon's Sweatin' to the Oldies.
Nu, and maybe you have something to send to the Kosher Cooking Carnival! Please send them here. And if you'd like to host an edition, please let me know at shilohmuse at yahoo dot com
And if you're dieting, or once dieted or blogged about dieting or would like to blog about dieting, I'm starting a new blog carnival about losing weight. More info about my new weight loss carnival, here.
I have gotten a bit involved with dieting since starting Start Fresh kosher weight loss diet. I'm so grateful to find a diet I can live on.
